Farmer's market in Switzerland
International Trade and Sustainable Agriculture
International governmental organisations such as the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) regularly publish documents that analyse the current state of agriculture markets and examine potential future scenarios. Other development oriented organisations also publish significant documents. Some of these reports are listed here. Oxfam is one of the leading non-governmental organisations that examine the international trade aspects of agriculture in detail. Other policy institutes and researchers publish position and policy papers on various aspects of commodity markets and agriculture trade. During the Food Price crisis in 2007-2008 a number of studies were published that continue to be relevant. The links here should provide a good starting point for understanding how sustainability factors into the discussions around the international trade of agriculture. Additionally, the World Trade Organization’s sources should be consulted given the primary importance of the Agreement on Agriculture in shaping the rules for international trade in agricultural goods - click here Finally, a good website for obtaining news updates is maintained by the ICTSD - click here
